In that and retweeting Kim Newman his main point seems to be that he doesn't like the kids. Which is fair enough as an opinion, and I haven't seen it yet so I don't know if he's right or not, but that is not legitimate criticism of a film. One of the major problems with modern cinema is the need for wholly sympathetic characters or at least ones that go through a serious redemptive arc.

Kermode is similar. Despite being completely wrong, he hates Noah Baumbach movies as he can't get over his distaste for the characters. He doesn't care that human stories about certain types of people are being told and he just switches off.

Just reading the comments on ain't it cool and had to post this here:

"I'm not "wrong" about the title being shit...because it IS. Sorry, I have a marketing background so things like this really stick out to me.

The title of a film should give you an intrigueing glimpse into what it's about. How in the holy FUCK can you go from "Attack the block" to "smartass urban kids resisting an alien attack"?"

What's the confusion they're having? Are they saying it should be called Protect the Block or Defend the Block (because that sort of makes sense) or is it something else altogether?
